LCG, August 27, 2010--Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCP&L) and KCP&L Greater Missouri Operations Company (formerly Aquila) yesterday announced that the new Iatan 2, electric generating facility completed in-service testing. Both companies are subsidiaries of Great Plains Energy Incorporated.

TVA Announces Plans Stop Burning Coal in Nine Electric Generating Units

LCG, August 25, 2010--The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced yesterday that, beginning next year, it will idle nine coal-fired units that have a combined electric generating capacity of approximately 1,000 MW. One of the units will be considered for repowering, with the fuel switched to biomass. These steps are part of TVA's strategy to replace or retire older, less-efficient, coal-fired units as a means of reducing carbon and other emissions from its generation portfolio.

Con Edison and LIPA Proceed with Plans for 700-MW Offshore Wind Farm

LCG, April 1, 2009--Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) and state-owned, Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and recently announced plans for further study of a wind farm located approximately 13 miles offshore from the Rockaway Peninsula. The project is spurred on by the Governor of New York's Renewable Energy Task Force and the Governor's "45 by 15" program, which sets a target to meet 45 percent of New York's load from renewable energy resources and improved energy efficiency by the year 2015.

The two utilities released on March 23 a joint feasibility study, which included results that support up to 700 MW of wind capacity being developed offshore, given corresponding significant upgrades are made to the transmission system.

An initial phase with a capacity of 350 MW would likely be the first step. To allow for substantial further capacity expansions, LIPA and Con Edison filed an application to interconnect the wind farm with the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) for up to 1400 MW by 2020.

LIPA and Con Edison now plan to work with the State of New York, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Port Authority to issue a request for expressions of interest (RFEI) for offshore wind development. A Request for Proposals (RFP) will be issued later in 2009.
