EDP Renewables Completes Scarlet II Solar and Energy Storage Project in California

LCG, May 7, 2025--EDP Renewables North America LLC (EDPR NA) announced yesterday the inauguration of its Scarlet II Solar Energy Park (Scarlet II) in Fresno County, California. This phase of the solar plus energy storage project includes 200 MW of solar capacity, plus a co-located 150 MW/600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The initial phase of the project, Scarlet I, which provides 200 MW of solar and 40 MW/160 MWh of BESS, achieved commercial operations in July 2024.

The full output of Scarlett II is contracted through a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), with resource adequacy associated with the 150 MW BESS contracted under long-term Resource Adequacy (RA) agreements with Ava Community Energy and San José Clean Energy. The agreements for the Scarlet I project are also with Ava Community Energy and San José Clean Energy. California's Resource Adequacy Program, which was established in 2004, ensures that load-serving entities (LSEs) have sufficient capacity to meet their customers' demand and maintain grid reliability.

Scarlet Solar Energy Park now totals 400 MW of solar and 190 MW/760 MWh of storage. The solar plus energy storage design provides additional resiliency to the regional grid, which has substantial intermittent generation resources.

Through continued expansion into the Central Valley, EDPR NA has over 1.1 GW of operational solar, wind, and storage projects throughout California and is one of the top renewable energy developers in California.

The CEO of EDPR NA stated, "After our successful launch of Scarlet I, we are thrilled to add Scarlet II to our portfolio and build on our record of delivering energy reliability and resiliency for Fresno County and the Golden State. We are proud that our meaningful partnerships and investments in the community helped generate strong local support for the expansion of Scarlet Solar Energy Park."

The Scarlet II project continued the environmental stewardship commitment EDPR NA has made under its Close the Loop Program, recycling over 170 tons of material over the course of construction. Through EPC Rosendin and various materials recyclers, over 60 percent of total reported construction materials were recycled.

EDPR NA is a renewable energy leader in California. EDPR NA states that the company's operational California footprint of 1.138 GW is spread across two phases of the Scarlet Solar Energy Park, three phases of the Rising Tree Wind Farm in Kern County, two phases of the Lone Valley Solar Park in San Bernardino County, two phases of the Sandrini I & II Solar Energy Park in Kern County, and the Windhub A Solar Park in Kern County. EDPR NA states that, across North America, it has developed more than 12 GW and operates more than 11.4 GW of onshore, utility-scale, renewable energy projects.
