NRC Approves Oklo's Principal Design Criteria Topical Report for Aurora Powerhouse

LCG, May 6, 2026--Oklo Inc. ("Oklo"), an advanced nuclear technology company, announced today that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the Principal Design Criteria (PDC) topical report for the Aurora-INL (Idaho National Laboratory) nuclear small modular reactor (SMR), which is currently under construction in Idaho. The PDC topical report establishes a regulatory framework that defines the fundamental safety, reliability, and performance requirements to guide future reactor licensing and design activities, and the approved report should simplify future applications and reduce the need to re-review established material.

The NRC approved the PDC topical report on an accelerated review schedule. Oklo received notice of the report’s acceptance in just 15 days compared to the typical 30- to 60-day period following submission to the regulator.

Oklo's co-founder and CEO stated, "This milestone reflects strong work by the Oklo team and timely engagement by the regulator. Performance-based licensing, clear criteria, and efficient reviews are important to advancing modern nuclear projects safely and responsibly."

The NRC has been working to modernize and accelerate its review process following executive orders issued in May 2025 to streamline licensing procedures. The NRC also follows the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy Act, or ADVANCE Act, which calls for a more efficient path to deployment for advanced nuclear technology.

When completed, the Aurora-INL project will be a 75-MW, sodium-cooled fast reactor that uses metal fuel. In September, the groundbreaking ceremony for Oklo's first reactor project occurred at the INL site. The project - one of three awarded to the company under the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) newly established Reactor Pilot Program - is scheduled to commence operations between late 2027 and early 2028, contingent upon regulatory approvals and construction progress. The Aurora-INL represents a major milestone in Oklo’s near-term commercialization strategy to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy using proven, advanced nuclear technology.

Last July, Oklo announced that it selected Kiewit Nuclear Solutions Co. as the lead constructor for its first commercial Aurora powerhouse. Kiewit Nuclear Solutions Co. (Kiewit), a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, will support the design, procurement, and construction of the Aurora-INL.

In November, Oklo announced a binding contract with Siemens Energy for the design and delivery of the power conversion system for Oklo’s Aurora powerhouse. The agreement authorizes Siemens Energy to begin engineering and design work to expedite procurement of long-lead components and initiate the manufacturing process for the power conversion system. The agreement combines Oklo’s expertise in advanced fission technology with Siemens Energy’s industry-leading steam turbine and generator systems to reliably produce electricity using proven industrial equipment.
