Calpine to Add 100 Megawatts at Florida Plant
LCG, July 7, 2000--Calpine Corp. said yesterday that it would add 100 megawatts of peaking capacity at its Auburndale, Fla. cogeneration plant near Winter Haven in central Florida and would take over operational responsibility.Calpine, which acquired a 50 percent interest in the facility in 1997, also said it had purchased the remaining half ownership in Auburndale from Edison Mission Energy, an Edison International Inc. unit that has operated the facility. The plant sells electric power under contract to Florida Power Corp. and steam to two local industrial customers.Bob Alff, a Calpine senior vice president, noted that Edison Mission Energy had been a great partner and added Acquiring full control at Auburndale will serve as a springboard for our further expansion into the Florida power market.Calpine said it would begin permitting activities immediately for a 100 megawatt gas-fired peaking turbine for Auburndale and planned to have it in operation by the summer of next year.Despite an environment hostile to out-of-state power producers, Calpine plans to press on with development of a 540 megawatt Osprey Energy Center adjacent to Auburndale and a 1,080 megawatt Blue Heron Energy Center near Vero Beach.Earlier this year, the Florida state Supreme Court ruled that Duke Energy Corp. could not develop a merchant power plant near New Smyrna Beach. The ruling was in response to pressure by the states three investor-owned utilities to keep competitive electric generation companies out of Florida.
