Ireland has Plenty of Power for Winter, Official Says

LCG, Nov. 28, 2000--Irish Minister of Transport, Energy and Communications Mary O'Rourke said yesterday at the opening of the new $110 million, 120 megawatt peat fired station near Edenderry, County Offaly, that Ireland would have enough power to meet the demands for electricity over the peak winter season, the Irish Times reported this morning.

"The chairman has told me on behalf of the (Electricity Supply Board) that there is sufficient power," O'Rourke said. "This new plant, which is around six months ahead of schedule should also help the situation."

Peak demand in Ireland should reach between 3,900 and 4,00 megawatts this winter, according to Ted Dalton, ESB managing director for Irish Electricity. ESB could generate 4,500 megawatts, with the new Edenderry power station adding another 120 megawatts to the national grid, he told the Irish Times.

The new Edenderry plant is the first major power station to come on stream resulting from open competition and is the first significant power station of any kind since 1986. It is expected to act as a blueprint for two new peat fired generating stations to be built by the ESB in Shannonbridge and Lanesboro.

The new facility will provide 45 jobs and will consume one million tons of peat annually. Using fluidized bed peat combustion technology, the plant is generating electricity from peat sourced from Brd na Mna (the Peat Development Authority) and supplying it to the ESB under a 30 year contract.
