California Regulators May Allow 20 Percent Rate Hike

LCG, Jan. 3, 2001The California Public Utilities Commission staff will recommend that the state's two largest electric utilities be granted "interim" rate increases of up to 20 percent, a source close to the Commission hearings said this morning.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. has been pushing for a 26 percent rate increase and Southern California Edison Co. has asked for 30 percent. Both companies say they will want more later, to pay for close to $9 billion in subsidies they have been forced to grant electricity customers.

A 20 percent rate increase would add between $10.50 and $13.00 to the typical householder's monthly electric bill.

The Commission began two days of hearings into the rate increase last Wednesday, but they spilled over into this week. The Commission staff will propose the rate increase, possibly late today, and the Commission will discuss and vote on it tomorrow.

In Sacramento, state lawmakers were expected to take up the state's electricity problems today in a special session of the Legislature called by Gov. Gray Davis.
