White House Calls California Power Interests Together
LCG, Jan. 5, 2001The Clinton administration has called California Gov. Gray Davis and officials of his state's two largest electric utilities to a White House meeting next week in an effort to resolve the energy crisis in the Golden State, the Washington Post reported this morning.The Post noted that California's economy is larger than that of all but five countries, but its utilities are threatened with bankruptcy and many of its businesses and consumers with soaring electricity bills. As the crisis has grown, so has rhetorical heat in California with more finger pointing than problem solving going on.Administration officials said they hope that by bringing all sides to the White House they can establish a new tone for negotiation and forge a compromise, the Post said."We feel that this is a serious enough situation that every party has to be willing to compromise andgo the extra mile to find a way out," a senior administration official told the Post. "We believe every effortshould be made to bring the parties together in search of at least a temporary solution." Steve Maviglio, a spokesman for Davis, said the governor hoped federal energy regulators would be told to cap the wholesale price of power. "That's the big kahuna for us," he said.
