Big Wind Farm Planned Near Walla Walla, Washington
LCG, Jan. 11, 2001FPL Energy, an affiliate of Florida Power & Light Co., will build the world's largest wind-powered electric generation facility on a vast tract of land southwest of Walla Walla, Wash., and PacifiCorp Power Marketing will purchase and market the entire 300 megawatt output of the project over a 25-year period, the companies said yesterday.The project will straddle the Oregon-Washington border, just east of where the Columbia River turns north. It will employ 450 wind turbines, 300 of them in Washington and 150 in Oregon."The Stateline project is just the sort of sustainable solution we need for the region's energyshortage," said Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber. "The project has the added benefit that it can bebrought on quickly to meet our immediate needs. I commend the companies for their foresight andpledge our state will provide a timely review of the project."Washington Governor Gary Locke was also enthusiastic. "This facility will help meet the increasing demand for electricity in our region while providing economic development to eastern Washington."It is estimated the project will add millions in revenue to the local economy and create an average of 150 construction jobs with a peak need for 350 workers.
