Connecticut Okays Dominion Purchase of Millstone Nukes
LCG, Jan. 24, 2001The Connecticut Department of Public utility Control said this morning it has approved the purchase by Dominion Resources Inc. of the three-unit Millstone nuclear power complex from Northeast Utilities.The DPUC noted in a news release that the price Dominion would pay for Millstone, almost $1.3 billion, was more than five times higher than the minimum bid of $232 million that was set for the state-ordered auction.Donald Downes, head of the DPUC, said that the sale will reduce the stranded costs of Northeast subsidiary Connecticut Light & Power Co. by about "half the original $3.5 billion amount." The DPUC news release said that the sale should result in savings of more than $500 million to Connecticut ratepayers."The department is pleased to be able to approve this sale because of the fine record of Dominion'soperations, a record sale price for nuclear plants and a financial win for the consumer," Downes said.This morning, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission also gave its approval to the sale.
