Florida Okays Calpine 529 Megawatt Power Plant

LCG, Feb. 13, 2001--Calpine Corp. said yesterday the Florida Public Service Commission has approved its plan to build a 529 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Auburndale, Fla., to supply electricity to Seminole Electric Cooperative Inc.

The new facility, which will be built next to an existing Calpine 150 megawatt cogeneration plant, will be called the Osprey Energy Center. Beginning in June 2003, when the new plant is expected to begin commercial operation, it will furnish power to Seminole under a 17-year agreement.

Calpine also plans to add a 100 megawatt peaking plant at the Osprey Energy Center to furnish power to the Florida wholesale market during periods of high demand.

Calpine senior vice president Bob Alff said "Today's vote is a milestone in the development of competitive power generation in Florida and is the keystone in Calpine's strategic plan for Florida and the southeastern United States." That plan includes a 1,080 megawatt merchant power plant near Vero Beach, Fla.

"We're pleased that the Florida PSC has approved this arrangement," said Tim Woodbury, Seminole's vice president for strategic services. "They agree the Seminole-Calpine arrangement is in the best interest of our members and our members' consumers."

Seminole, a generation and transmission cooperative, provides bulk supplies of electricity to 10 member distribution co-ops located throughout peninsular Florida. They serve more than 1.5 million residential, commercial and industrial consumers in 45 counties.
