Reliant Plans Two Plants on One Nevada Site

LCG, April 6, 2001Reliant Energy Power Generation said yesterday it would build a 310 megawatt peaking power plant and a 575 megawatt baseload facility on a single site near Primm, Nev., about 35 miles south of Las Vegas.

Both plants at Reliant Energy Bighorn will be natural gas-fired and will meet or exceed all stateand federal requirements for air emissions, water quality, and noise. Between them, they will use in total only 220-acre-feet of water per year under an existing allocation.

"We are committed to Nevada, and we want to help provide the state with a balanced portfolio ofgeneration assets," said Joe Bob Perkins, president and chief operating officer of Reliant EnergyWholesale Group.

"To date, the majority of proposed new generation will come from baseload units; however, a reliable and efficient generation system also must include generation dedicated to meeting peak demand," he added.

The company has filed applications for and air permit and building permit and has asked the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for authorization to build 30 miles of transmission interconnection right-of-way, the majority of which will follow, or run adjacent to, existing Nevada Power Co. right-of-way.

Reliant said it expects to start construction on both facilities this September, with a projected commercial operation date of June 1 of next year for the peaking facility and June 1, 2003, for the baseload plant.
