Oglethorpe Plans 652 Megawatt Georgia Plant

LCG, April 19, 2001Oglethorpe Power Corp. said yesterday it would build a 652 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant northeast of Columbus, Ga. to meet the growing needs of its electric distribution cooperatives.

Michael W. Price, chief operating officer of the power supply cooperative, said the Talbot County project is a much-needed facility that will "help ensure adequate power for our members and their consumers and help avoid some of the problems like those now being experienced in California."

Grading has already begun on the plant site, which is located within a 200-acre parcel recently acquired in a land swap with a paper company. The first four of the facility's planned six units are scheduled for operation a year from now, with an additional two units scheduled for the summer of 2003.

Price said construction could begin as early as June, pending the issuance of an air permit by the state Environmental Protection Division. The Rural Utilities Service, a federal agency expected to provide a loan guarantee for the project, recently determined through an environmental assessment that the facility would have no significant impact on the environment.
