Bonneville Spills Water to Aid Salmon
LCG, June 5, 2001The Bonneville power Administration, which markets power from 29 dams on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest, said it and other federal agencies responsible for the hydroelectric facilities have decided to spill water at two more dams to help endangered salmon swim past the structures.Spilling water to help the fish has become controversial as the result of a long drought which has reduced river flows to less than 60 percent of normal in the region. With production of electricity tied directly to river flows, the Northwest is expected to have less than two-thirds of its normal amount of power this summer.Spills were initiated about two weeks ago at The Dalles and Bonneville dams, costing the facilities an estimated 300 megawatts of electric production. Now, the John Day and McNary dams have been added to the fish protection measure.In the spring, 11 species of salmon protected under the Endangered Species Act, migrate to the Pacific Ocean, and the spills are designed to protect them from the blades of the dams mighty turbines. Even with the new spills, the total volume of water spilled is less than a third called for by federal guidelines.
