Calpine Plans 1,000 Megawatts for Virginia

LCG, Nov. 21, 2001--Calpine Corp. said this morning that it plans to build, own and operate a 1,000 megawatt combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power plant in Gravel Neck, Va., northwest of Newport News.

The company said the proposed Chippokes Energy Center represents an investment of about $500 million and is planned for commercial operations in mid-2005.

"The Chippokes Energy Center will be among the first new combined-cycle generating facilities in the Virginia-Carolinas region of the Southeastern power market, and reinforces our presence in this important market sector," said Bob Alff, a Calpine senior vice president and head of its eastern region.

"The Chippokes facility, combined with our growing portfolio of assets throughout the Southeast, will allow us to capture significant economies of scale, establish strong geographic diversity, and provide customers with highly reliable system-based products and services throughout this important market region," he added.

As Calpine plans to configure the plant, it will provide 790 megawatts of baseload power and have an additional 210 megawatts of peaking capacity. The plant will interconnect with a substation owned by Virginia Electric & Power Co., providing excellent transmission access to markets throughout the Southeast, Calpine said.

Ernest L. Blount, chairman of the Surry County Board of Supervisors, said "Modern power plants are clean and quiet neighbors and represent a high value investment for our community. We welcome Calpine and look forward to working with them as the project moves forward."
