Solar Project Will Serve 400,000 in Rural Philippines
LCG, Feb. 7, 2002--A rural section of the Philippines' island province of Mindanao is a party to an agreement with Spain and BP Solar for the installation of solar power for lighting and water systems in a remote, undeveloped area.Spain will provide 2.4 billion pesos ($48 million) of aid for the project, coordinated by Agrarian Reform Secretary Hernani Braganza. Approximately one-third of the country's poor live in Mindanao. The project is seen as a more cost-effective way to provide power than connecting the area to the main National Power Corp. transmission network and transporting fuel for local generators. The first of two phases in the installation process will begin in September, and will provide lighting to 5,500 families. Later, 25 irrigation systems and 97 systems to process and distribute drinking water will be installed. Eventually, 68 schools and community centers and 79 health clinics will be electrified. The second phase will also provide lighting for an additional 9,500 homes.
