Landfill Becomes Source of Power
LCG, March 18, 2002-A Pennsylvania landfill has become a source of electric power.600,000 cubic feet of methane gas will be combusted to power a Caterpillar generator at the West Burlington landfill. The heat will be used to decompose organic waste and generate electricity. The little system will product 800 kilowatts to be sold on the open market.Other landfills prevent methane-related accidents by burning excess gas already released, but the Pennsylvania landfill has drilled wells in the landfill and used blowers to extract gas from the wells to supply their generator.PPL Energy Services, a subsidiary of the PPL Corporation, managed the project, saying that their system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by limiting "landfill gas," the odorless methane that landfills produce as waste decays.
