Massive Chinese Gas Field Located
LCG, May 23, 2002--Chinese scientists have identified a natural gas field in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region with proven reserves more substantial than those found in any other such field in China.The North China-based field can be forecast to produce 6.5 billion cubic meters annually, according to the Science and Technology minister Shi Dinghuan. The overall size of the field is around 602.5 billion cubic meters.Minister Shi said, "the field wiill greatly back up the country's project of west-to-east gas transportation and help ease the energy shortage in eastern areas." Currently, 10 percent of Beijing's energy needs are accounted for by natural gas. A researcher with the Chinese Institute of Oil Exploration, Qian Kai, estimates that boosting gas use to the point at which it supplies 30 percent of Beijing's needs would bring about a significant change in air quality.The Changqing Oil and Gas Field Company, which took part in the exploration phase, will transport gas to Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta areas.
