Ontario Reserves to Rise Slowly

LCG, Sep. 27, 2002--Ontario is expected to require significant imports of electric power for the rest of the current year as well as in 2003, due to continued outages at nuclear plants.

This conclusion concerning thin supply reserves was reached by the Ontario Independent Electricity Market Operator, which released its quarterly 18-month outlook early this week. The price of electricity rose significantly in the province during the summer, when high demand required a greater part of demand to be met with generation outside Ontario.

Of the two nuclear plants at which generators have been out for overhauls, four Pickering A units are thought to be returning to service at close to nine-month intervals. Each offers 515 megawatts. Ontario Power Generation owns the units as well as another group of reactors which is operational, Pickering B.

Two units at Bruce Power are expected to return to service by the summer of 2003, which would bring 1,700 megawatts online.
