Utilities Clean Up After Hurricane Lili

LCG, Oct. 7, 2002--The damage caused by last week's Hurricane Lili on Louisiana electricity customers lingers, with 20,000 customers still without power as of Monday.

The transmission system of two utilities, Entergy Corp. and Cleco Corp., still requires repairs, although the impact of the hurricane, which cut power to 400,000, has largely been countered. "Our transmission system was severely damaged in southern Louisiana," an Entergy spokesman, Morgan Stewart, said.

Entergy had brought 43 out of 62 affected transmission lines back into service by Sunday evening, but was still working on a 500-kilivolt line, Weber/Richard, in the western part of Entergy's territory. No estimate of the line's return to service was given.

Cleco's service territory has been brought entirely back to service, but further repairs are needed. It was the most severe storm ever for Cleco, in terms of the proportion of customers who lost service. One of every two customers were without power.
