FPL Energy Wants to Own 50 Percent of Nuclear Operator

LCG, Sept. 15, 2003--FPL Energy has reached an agreement with British Energy concerning the price at which it could acquire British Energy's 50-percent stake in the nuclear power-plant operator AmerGen Energy.

The deal, worth $276.5 million, would need to receive approval by the other owner, Exelon Corp., a Chicago-based utility holding company. Unless Exelon exercises its right of first refusal within 30 days, FPL Energy, a subsidiary of FPL Group, would be able to complete the purchase in the first quarter of 2004. FPL Energy would receive $8.3 million from Exelon if the purchase was refused.

AmerGen Energy operates nuclear plants in Clinton, Ill., Middleton, Pa., and in Lacey, New Jersey. The three plants have a total capacity of 2,480 megawatts. FPL Energy currently owns one nuclear plant in Seabrook, N.J., as well as approximately 90 other gas-fired and wind-powered generating units across the country.
