Duke Will Sell Assets in Southeast

LCG, Jan. 7, 2004--Power plant projects yet to be completed and plants that began operations in the Southeast as recently as 2001 and 2002 are to be sold by Duke Energy Corp.'s Duke Energy North America merchant division.

Duke Energy North America (DENA) may agree to partner with other companies in completing unfinished projects, such as the Grays Harbor Energy Facility in Washington state, but it could also liquidate its interest completely. Grays Harbor, as well as the Moapa (Nevada) and Deming (New Mexico) projects, have been put on hold.

The merchant developer said it will sell unspecified plants from its portfolio of eight operational plants in Mississippi, Arkansas and/or Georgia. Among the plants it owns are the 1,240-megawatt Murray Energy Facility in Georgia, and the 640-megawatt Marshall Energy Facility, in Kentucky. Both of those projects began operating in June 2002, while the first to enter the market was the Mississippi-based Hinds Energy Facility, which started producing in May 2001.
