LCG, April 15, 2026--Suniva announced yesterday that it has entered agreements to bring a state-of-the-art 4.5 GW solar cell manufacturing facility to Laurens, South Carolina. The new facility, combined with Suniva’s existing facility at its headquarters in metro Atlanta, will bring the company’s total annual domestic solar cell manufacturing capacity to over 5.5 GW.

LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

Survey of Offshore Areas Made Part of Senate Energy Bill
LCG, June 16, 2003--A vote to require the Interior Department to carry out a survey of offshore areas to estimate potential gas and oil reserves was approved by the Senate 54-44, despite a moratorium on offshore drilling scheduled through 2012.A House-Senate conference committee will decide whether the measure is to be included in jointly developed legislation. Presidents Bush (the senior) and Clinton approved blocking funding of drilling projects, which have been opposed by legislators from coastal areas since the early 1980's. Supporters of the measure noted that it does not allow the leasing of lands, but would "simply help us to make more accurate and informed decisions," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.Impetus for the survey came from concern about the current shortfall in natural gas production, of 3 trillion cubic feet annually, relative to 23 trillion cubic feet of consumption. Some who opposed the survey, such as Washington state's Maria Cantwell, a Democrat, believe the survey opens up their districts to possible economic harm, through potential effects of drilling on industries such as fishing and tourism.
