New Peaking Plants Planned for North Carolina

LCG, August 12, 2004--The North Carolina Electric Membership Corp. (NCEMC) is planning to build two power plants in North Carolina to meet the growing summer and winter peaking requirements of its members. The combined capacity of the natural gas-fired peaking plants would be about 600 MW.

According to NCEMC, there are sites under consideration in Person, Anson, Wake and Richmond Counties. The Anson site is southwest of Blewett Falls Lake and south of Clark Mountain, roughly 50 miles east of uptown Charlotte.

The power plant proposed for Person County would have a capacity of 340 MW and is estimated to cost $150 million. The plant would have low-sulfur fuel oil as a back-up. Construction is planned to begin in late 2005 or early 2006, with operations targeted to commence in 2007.
