Cape Wind Project Clears Regulatory Hurdle
LCG, January 17, 2008--The Federal Minerals Management Service (MMS) Monday released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Cape Wind Energy Project, with a finding that there are no major environmental impacts associated with the project. The project developer, Cape Wind, has pursued government approval since 2001.
The Cape Wind Energy Project has a design generating capacity of 468 MW and is located in Nantucket Sound, about five miles off the shore of Massachusetts. The project includes 120 wind turbines that would - at the highest blade tip - extend 440 feet above the surface of the water. Concerns of opponents to the project include the visibility of the wind farm and related impacts on tourism.
The MMS is the lead Federal permitting agency and filed the DEIS with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The MMS will receive comments on the DEIS through March 20, 2008, and public hearings regarding the DEIS are planned for March as well. The MMS expects to issue a Final Environmental Impact Statement and a Record of Decision by the end of the year, according to an earlier statement.
