DTE Energy Receives License from NRC for New Reactor at Fermi Plant

LCG, June 12, 2015-The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently approved the license to construct and operate Fermi Unit 3 at DTE Energy's existing nuclear plant near Newport, Michigan, where the 1,170-MW Fermi Unit 2 has been operating since 1988.

Fermi Unit 3 is the fifth new reactor to complete the NRC's combined license (COL) process. DTE Energy has not committed to building the new reactor and is keeping the option open for long-term planning purposes.

GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy is the reactor vendor for Fermi Unit 3, and the reactor type is an Economic Simplified Boiling-Water Reactor (ESBWR). The NRC certified the ESBWR design in October 2014. The ESBWR is a single-cycle, boiling-water reactor (BWR). The containment vessel is a cylindrical steel-lined reinforced concrete structure integrated with the reactor building. Based on the reference design, the plant operates at a net estimated electrical power output of approximately 1,535 MW.

DTE Energy submitted its COL application to the NRC in September, 2008.
