WPS to Build Coal Plant in Wisconsin

9/26/2002
LCG, Sep. 26-Wisconsin may see a new 500-megawatt coal-fired power generator, if Wisconsin Public Service Corporation moves on its construction plans.

Yesterday WPS announced plans to build a $650-700 million coal generator at its established Weston site; the generator would become the fourth unit at the plant, which currently has 435 megawatts of capacity.

The corporation's intentions are unusual because most recent power projects in the energy sector have been gas-fired and many power companies have been canceling or postponing generator construction because of unfavorable market conditions.

The plans must pass at least one year's worth of permitting, and the plant, if approved, might be online as soon as 2008.

WPS serves 475,000 customers in the Midwest.
