Belarus Selects Russians to Build Nuclear Power Station
LCG, January 22, 2009--A Belarus government spokesperson announced yesterday that the government selected Russia's Atomstroiexport to construct a nuclear power station in Belarus. Construction of the first, 1,000-MW nuclear reactor is scheduled to be completed in 2016 and a second reactor completed in 2018.
Atomstroiexport, Russia's nuclear-reactor builder, has successfully pursued nuclear projects in developing countries around the world. Two Russian VVER reactors came on-line in 2006 and 2007 at China's Tianwan Nuclear Power Station. Additional projects are underway in China and Bulgaria, with prospects being pursued in India, southeast Asia, and Africa.
