Official Report Submitted Regarding David-Besse Nuke

LCG, April 22, 2002-On Friday FirstEnergy gave the Nuclear Regulatory Commission its official report regarding the corroded David-Besse nuclear reactor.

FirstEnergy reported that its findings were not deviant from the probable cause report it initially filed with NRC.

Boric acid, a product of the operation of the reactor, created cracks in two control rod drive mechanism nozzles. The cracks were found to have probably developed over a time period of at least four years.

Acid also corroded the steel reactor head; boron deposits on the head may have obscured the crack propagation and prevented inspectors from noticing the otherwise dramatic corrosion.

A better reactor head design, or modifications to the existing reactor, would have allowed inspectors to see problems earlier. FirstEnergy noted that correct use of the boric acid corrosion control program could have possibly averted the corrosion.

FirstEnergy also gave NRC a list of corrections underway, including a comprehensive inspection of all equipment and enhancement of the boric acid corrosion control program.

NRC had announced that according to industry standards, FirstEnergy should have found the corrosion much earlier.

Last month four workers at the plant were found to be host to tiny radioactive particles. While the radiation from the particles was negligible, NRC is investigating the incident.
