NRC Accepts Application for New Nuclear Station in Florida Proposed by Progress
LCG, October 7, 2008--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) yesterday announced that it accepted for review, a combined construction and operating license (COL) application submitted by Progress Energy Florida (Progress) for two new nuclear reactors at a greenfield site in Levy County near Crystal River, Florida. The application was submitted on July 30.
Progress plans to install two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors that each have a nominal electric generating capacity of 1,100 MW. The AP1000 design incorporates passive safety features that rely upon natural forces and was certified by the NRC in 2006. The NRC is now reviewing a Westinghouse application, submitted in May 2007, to amend the certified design.
According to the NRC, accepting the application by the NRC does not preclude additional requests for information as the review proceeds; nor does it indicate whether the NRC will approve the license.
In April 2008, Progress announced that it had executed a letter of intent with Westinghouse Electric and The Shaw Group Inc. to purchase long-lead materials for the new nuclear reactors.
In July 2008, the Florida Public Service Commission approved the proposal by Progress for a determination of need to build the two reactors, with the first reactor scheduled to be operational in 2016, and the second reactor in the following year.
