Faster-than-Expected Data Center Load Growth May Cause Increased Regional Short-term Fossil Fuel Generation and Wholesale Electricity Prices

LCG, March 18, 2026--The EIA released a new "In-depth Analysis" of the potential impact of faster-than-expected near-term growth in data center power demand on power generation and wholesale prices on March 12. The analysis models the lower 48 states through 2027 and compares results to its base case scenario. Missouri PSC Approves Grain Belt Express HVDC Transmission Project

LCG, March 22, 2019--The Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a request filed by Grain Belt Express Clean Line LLC for a certificate of convenience and necessity (CCN) to construct, own, operate, control, manage and maintain a high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) transmission line to move power east from wind farms in western Kansas to load centers in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The PSC concluded that the Grain Belt Express project would provide short- and long-term benefits to ratepayers and citizens of Missouri. Additional regulatory approval for the multi-state project is necessary prior to construction.

The estimated cost of the Grain Belt Express project is $2.3 billion. The project calls for installing a 4,000-MW, 780-mile overhead transmission line extending from the Iron Star wind farm in southwestern Kansas to parts of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

The project was proposed by Grain Belt Express Clean Line Energy Partners in 2014, and Invenergy announced plans to acquire all the development assets of the Grain Belt Express transmission project, pending appropriate regulatory approvals, in November 2018.
