U.S. Coal-fired Generating Capacity Retirements in 2025 Are Less Than 20 Percent of Retirements in 2022

LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

EPA Proposes Rule Changes to Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Requirements to Restore American Energy Dominance

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Alberta Utilities Commission Approves Greengate Power's 400-MW Solar Project

LCG, August 28, 2019--Greengate Power Corporation (Greengate) announced yesterday that it has received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to construct and operate the 400-MW Travers Solar project pursuant to the Alberta Hydro and Electric Energy Act and the Alberta Utilities Commission Act. The Travers Solar project is expected to be Canada???s largest operating solar energy project.

The Travers Solar project, with an estimated total investment of approximately $500 million, is scheduled to begin construction next year and achieve full commercial operations in 2021. Under development since 2017, the project will include approximately 2.5 million solar PV modules to be installed over 4,700 acres of privately owned, cultivated, and grazing land located near the Village of Lomond, in Vulcan County, Alberta.

The President and CEO of Greengate stated, "We are very pleased to have received approval for what we expect will be Canada???s largest solar energy project and one of the largest in the world. This continues our successful track record, having already developed some of the largest renewable energy projects in the country. We anticipate that Travers Solar will bring significant investment, employment and clean renewable energy to Alberta while strengthening the province's position as a global energy and environmental leader."
