X-energy Commences First Irradiation Tests of Advanced TRISO-X Nuclear Fuel at Idaho National Laboratory

LCG, November 6, 2025--X-energy Reactor Company, LLC, (X-energy) and the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy today announced the start of confirmatory irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to qualify X-energy’s proprietary TRISO-X fuel pebbles for commercial use in the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). (TRISO stands for TRi-structural ISOtropic). This is the first time that TRISO-X fuel pebbles will undergo irradiation testing in a U.S. lab, which is a critical step in meeting requirements set forth by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the commercial deployment of advanced reactors that will use the fuel.

NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Governor of Rhode Island Announces Legislation to Procure 600 MW of Offshore Wind

LCG, March 24, 2022--The Governor of Rhode Island yesterday announced that legislation has been introduced which would require a market-competitive procurement for approximately 600 MW of newly-developed offshore wind capacity. If enacted, Rhode Island’s primary utility company would be required to issue the procurement no later than August 15, 2022.

The proposed legislation is a step toward achieving the 2021 Act on Climate, which was signed by the Governor last April. The Act on Climate sets mandatory, enforceable climate emissions reduction goals that target net-zero, economy-wide emissions by 2050.

The Governor stated, “As home to the nation’s first offshore wind farm, Rhode Island is a pioneer in the blue economy. Offshore wind represents one of the best opportunities for Rhode Island to scale up its clean energy resources in order to meet our greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. Expanding our offshore wind resources will further our state’s position as the North American hub for industry activity, attracting new investment and job growth opportunities across the green economy.”

North America’s first commercial offshore wind farm, the 30-MW Block Island wind farm, is offshore Rhode Island and began operations in late 2016. In 2019, the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved the 400 MW Revolution Wind offshore project.

The additional 600 MW of offshore wind sought in the newly proposed legislation would further expand the state’s clean energy portfolio, with estimates that the additional offshore wind capacity would have the potential to meet 30 percent of Rhode Island’s estimated 2030 electricity demand. If the energy generated includes the 30 MW Block Island Wind farm and the planned 400 MW Revolution Wind project, offshore wind would cover 50 percent of the state’s projected energy needs.

The Governor’s proposed legislation (S-2583 and H-7971) would also require offshore wind developers to provide information on potential environmental impacts through the submittal of an environmental and fisheries mitigation plan; estimates of local economic benefits; a diversity, equity and inclusion plan; and a plan outlining the bidder’s intentions with respect to the negotiation of a project labor agreement(s) to cover construction activities.

Any proposed offshore wind contract would require review by the Office of Energy Resources, the Department of Environmental Management, and Rhode Island Commerce in the form of agency advisory opinions. Such contracts would also have to be filed with the Public Utilities Commission for review and approval, including opportunities for public comment.
