NuScale Power Achieves Standard Design Approval from NRC for 77 MW SMR

LCG, May 30, 2025--NuScale Power Corporation (NuScale), a leading provider of advanced small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear technology, yesterday announced that it has received design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its uprated 77 MW power modules. NuScale states that it remains the only SMR technology company with design approval from the NRC, and the company remains on track for deployment by 2030, with 50- and 77-MW SMR options.

EIA Presents Analysis of California's Solar and Wind Power Curtailment Challenges

LCG, May 29, 2025--The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released an analysis yesterday showing that the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), the grid operator for most of the state, is increasing its curtailment of the rapidly growing solar- and wind-powered generation facilities in order to balance electricity supply and demand, which is necessary to maintain a stable electric system.

The NRC stated that this "completes the NRC’s technical review ahead of schedule and under budget, demonstrating the agency’s commitment to safely and efficiently enable new, advanced reactor technology."

The uprate approval by the NRC increases the power output per module from NuScale’s previously-approved 50 MW design, which now provides a wider range of power generation options to off-takers and consumers for reliable, carbon-free nuclear energy. NuScale’s exclusive global strategic partner for developing SMR facilities is ENTRA1 Energy, an independent global energy production company developing, financing and owning plants.

“We are thrilled that the NRC has approved our second SDA application, this time for our 77 MWe design. This marks a historic moment not only for NuScale, but the entire industry, as NuScale and ENTRA1 move closer to meeting the demands of clean energy users,” said NuScale's President and Chief Executive Officer. “For more than a decade, our team has proudly worked alongside the NRC to achieve the successful approval of our designs. The NRC is domestically and internationally recognized and respected for its rigorous safety standards, and this approval is a crucial step toward meeting our goal of providing clean, reliable, and, most importantly, safe energy to off-takers and consumers.”

NuScale’s first Design Certification Application (DCA) for its SMR plant comprising up to twelve 50 MW power modules was accepted by the NRC in March 2017 and approved in January 2023, making it the first SMR design to be approved for use in the U.S.

NuScale’s new, uprated 77-MW SMR design continues to use natural “passive” processes such as convection and gravity in its operating systems and safety features. The uprated SMR plant design includes six modules that produce a total of approximately 460 MW of electric capacity, and all SMRs are all partially immersed in a safety-related pool built below ground level.

The approval was originally scheduled for approval later this summer, but yesterday's announcement marks the early completion of the NRC review process.

This accelerated approval may be an example of more to come, as President Trump last Friday signed several key executive orders to usher in a nuclear renaissance, directing the Department of Energy (DOE) to take a lead role in unleashing the American nuclear renaissance. At the signing event, the Energy Secretary stated, “For too long, America’s nuclear energy industry has been stymied by red tape and outdated government policies, but thanks to President Trump, the American nuclear renaissance is finally here. With the emergence of AI and President Trump’s pro-American manufacturing policies at work, American civil nuclear energy is being unleashed at the perfect time. Nuclear has the potential to be America’s greatest source of energy addition. It works whether the wind is blowing, or the sun is shining, is possible anywhere and at different scales. President Trump’s executive orders today unshackle our civil nuclear energy industry and ensure it can meet this critical moment.”

“NuScale is proud to have worked with the NRC and to have met its stringent regulatory application process as we continue to lead the way in the SMR industry with our second design approval,” said the NuScale's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Services. “With today’s announcement, NuScale continues to advance with ENTRA1 Energy in the commercialization of our SMR technology inside ENTRA1 Energy Plants while remaining steadfast in our mission to improve the quality of life for people around the world through safe, clean energy.”
