Conectiv to Build 500 Megawatter in Pennsylvania

LCG, July 14, 2000--Conectiv Energy Supply Inc. will build a 500 megawatt natural gas-fired, combined-cycle merchant power plant on a 30-acre site purchased from Bethlehem Steel Corp. in Pennsylvania, its parent holding company said yesterday in a news release.

The 30-acre parcel is located in the City of Bethlehem, within the 1,600 acres of the former Bethlehem Steel plant site that are being developed as the Bethlehem Commerce Center to include distribution, transportation, warehousing and industrial businesses, the steel company said.

Conective said it plans to build a $300 million powerhouse to supply wholesale electricity to the PJM Interconnection. The first phase, installation of gas-fired combustion turbines, will come on line in the simple cycle mode in 2002 and a steam turbine-generator will be added to recover waste heat and allow combined-cycle operation the following year. The plant may be expanded to 1,100 megawatts sometime in the future.

Don Cunningham, Bethlehems mayor, said "This type of project provides the type of industrial development that is necessary within the city. It is essential for the long-term economic health of the city to have a foundation of industrial tax base."

Adjoining the 1,600-acre Bethlehem Commerce Center will be a 160-acre historical site known as Bethlehem Works, which will retain historic and architecturally significant steelmaking-related buildings and will be anchored by the National Museum of Industrial History in association with the Smithsonian Institution.
