Reliant Brings Illinois Merchant Power Plant On Line

LCG, July 17, 2000--The first phase of Reliant Energy Inc.s new 340 megawatt merchant power plant in Shelby County, Ill., began commercial operations Friday, less than five months after construction began at the site 180 miles southwest of Chicago.

"This fast-track development project has been under construction since the first quarter of the yearto meet increasing demand for electricity by consumers in Midwest power markets," said Joe BobPerkins, Reliant Energy Wholesale Group president and chief operating officer.

The "fast track" was made possible by the plants design, which consists of eight General Electric natural gas turbines, five of which have been installed. Those gas turbines are about the size of some large jet engines produced by GE.

The facility will be operated in simple-cycle as a peaking plant, Reliant said, mostly during the day in summer months from June through September when air-conditioners are running.

Perkins paid tribute to Reliant employees, contractors, suppliers, Shelby County craft worker and laborers and everyone else involved in the whirlwind effort. "We're pleased that the plant was completed on schedule and met an aggressive target for commercial operation," he said.
