Republicans Back Nuclear Environment Benefits

LCG, Aug. 1, 2000--Delegates to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia yesterday voted on the Grand Old Partys national platform, and among the calls for tax cuts and extending Nafta to include our South American neighbors was an endorsement of nuclear generation of electric power.

Hydroelectric generation also got the nod, even from fish lovers who worry about dams. One delegate observed that most conservatives were conservationists. "Its hard to be one without being the other," he noted, "inasmuch as the words mean pretty much the same thing."

The platform language scathes the Clinton administration for its concentration on unproved and unpractical means of emissions-free production of electric power. "The current administration has turned its back on the two sources that produce virtually all the nation's emission-free power: nuclear and hydro, the sources for nearly 30 percent of the country's electricity," the platform states.

"Because of cumbersome federal relicensing of hydro and nuclear operations, we face the prospect of increasing emissions and dirtier air," the Republican statement continued.
