Sempra Energy Trading Opens Madrid Office

LCG, Sept. 8, 2000Sempra Energy Corp.'s wholesale energy trading subsidiary said yesterday it had opened an office in Madrid, Spain, under the name of Sempra Energy Europe Espaa. Rafael Abati, a founder of Madrid's SKS Energy Trading will head up the operation.

Todd Esse, a senior vice president of Sempra Energy Trading's European operations, said "Part of our company's strategy is to be a leading player in the European continent's energy marketplace. We will continue to carry out this strategy by aggressively pursuing similar growth opportunities while building a strong and diverse customer base in both northern and southern Europe."

Sempra is moving into Spain largely because of deregulation of the country's electricity market which has allowed about 68,000 large industrial customers to contract for power on the open market, but liberalization of the natural gas market is not far behind.

In Esse's opinion, this represents a tremendous wholesale marketing opportunity. The company will offer power, natural gas and crude oil commodity trading and marketing, as well as risk management and financial services to industrial companies, power generators and utilities throughout Spain.
