Nine Mile Point 2 Down for Planned Maintenance

LCG, Sept. 11, 2000The 1,148 megawatt Nine Mile Point Unit 2 nuclear power plant operated by Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. was in "hot standby" this morning, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's daily plant status report.

The report said the plant had been shut down for maintenance, which was confirmed by company officials who said reactor components will receive a chemical treatment designed to reduce the effects of corrosion. Maintenance work will also be done on other plant equipment, including several valve system repairs.

"Hot standby" permits work to be done on most plant components while operating temperatures and pressures are maintained even though no nuclear reaction is taking place. That allows the plant to be restarted quickly once the work is completed.

The company said Nine Mile Point Unit 2 would probably be returned to service this coming weekend.

Niagara Mohawk operated the plant and owns a 41 percent share of the facility. Other owners are New York State Electric & Gas Corp. with 18 percent, the Long Island Power Authority which also owns 18 percent, Rochester Gas & Electric Corp. with 14 percent, and Central Hudson Gas &Electric Corp. at 9 percent.

The plant is located on Lake Ontario in Scriba, N.Y., about 7 miles east of Oswego.
