AES to Power Congo Magnesium Project

LCG, Sept. 13, 2000A Canadian company that refines magnesium and AES Corp., the big U.S. independent power producer, have signed an agreement for an AES subsidiary to take care of the energy end of a project to develop a magnesium project in West-Central Africa.

William B. Burton, president and chief executive of Magnesium Alloy Corp. of Nova Scotia, said in a statement yesterday that AES Sirocco would be responsible for the entire energy program, beginning with feasibility studies and continuing through construction and operation of energy facilities.

Magnesium Alloy is in the early stages of development of the Kouilou Magnesium Project at Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo. The project will produce magnesium metal and alloys at what is said to be one of the world's richest magnesium salt deposits.

The Republic of Congo is a portion of the former French Equatorial Africa. It is frequently confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo which is the former Belgian Congo and was called Zaire for a time. Neither country can be considered politically stable.
