NRC Issues 'Strategic' Five-Year Plan

LCG, Oct. 17, 2000The Nuclear Regulatory Commission yesterday issued a five-year plan outlining the agency's mission, what it plans to accomplish and how it will be able to know whether it is meeting its objectives. The plan runs through fiscal 2005.

The NRC gives highest priority to public health and safety in its regulation of nuclear power plants, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, nuclear waste disposal, and the industrial and medical uses of nuclear materials, according to a summary of the plan released yesterday.

But, according to NRC chairman Richard A. Meserve, "To be a successful regulator, we must consider the effects of our decisions on the public and the industries we regulate." That means "making our activities and decisions more effective and efficient, enhancing public confidence, and reducing unnecessary regulatory burden."

A multi-megabyte copy of the plan is available from the NRC. Briefly, the agency set goals in four areas: nuclear reactor safety, nuclear material safety, nuclear waste safety and international nuclear safety support.
