Reliant Plans 500 Megawatt Plant for Nevada

LCG, Oct. 19, 2000--Reliant energy Inc. said yesterday that its Reliant Energy Power Generation Inc. subsidiary will build a 500 megawatt merchant power plant about 20 miles north of Las Vegas, Nev. It will be Reliant's second facility in the Las Vegas area.

The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle Arrow Canyon project will be located in a canyon on a portion of private land owned by Republic Services of Southern Nevada Inc., which operates a 1,200-acre landfill at the site. Republic Services will lease a small parcel of land near the landfill to Reliant Energy for this project.

According to J. Douglas Divine, senior vice president for generation development with Reliant's wholesale group, the plant will be air-cooled, using the smallest possible volumes of water. The company said it will contract with Republic Services for what water it does need under an existing water allocation.

Joe Bob Perkins, president and chief operating officer of Reliant Energy Wholesale Group, said Arrow Canyon would provide power to Las Vegas, "one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S."

Reliant and a partner jointly own and operate El Dorado Energy, a 480 megawatt facility southeast of Las Vegas, near Boulder City. That natural gas-fired plant began commercial operation earlier this year.
