North Carolina Power Agency Shopping for Juice

LCG, Oct. 25, 2000-- North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency said yesterday it is looking for a new supplier to begin providing for some of its power needs beginning in January 2004.

The agency said a contract with Carolina Power & Light Co. will expire on Dec. 31, 2003, so it is going to the wholesale market place in order to get the best mix and price for its power supply program.

Eastern Agency, as it is called for short, said it will need around 900 to 950 megawatts of capacity in the summer peak months of 2004, with increasing amounts in subsequent years to handle load growth. It has issued requests for proposals, which will be accepted through December 11, and said "anyone who is interested in submitting a proposal" should give it a call.

The agency is the full requirements power supplier to 32 municipal utility members located in eastern North Carolina. Twenty-three of the cities and towns are connected to CP&L's transmission system and the other nine municipalities are connected to the Virginia Electric & Power Co. wires.
