Regulators Okay South Jersey Gas 19 Percent Rate Hike

LCG, Nov. 10, 2000--South Jersey Gas Co. said yesterday the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities had authorized an annual rate increase for natural gas of about 19 percent for the typical residential customer.

The company said a typical residential heating customer should expect to see a $152.29 totalannual increase, which is enough money to do something with.

The company pointed out that the increase only applies to the portion of the bill that represents the gas commodity and serves as a method to pass gas costs through to customers. South Jersey Gas said it makes no profit on the sales of the natural gas commodity itself.

" Over the last several months energy prices nationwide rose dramatically for most major fuel sources including oil and natural gas. This rate increase was necessary to recover the record wholesale natural gas costs we've already incurred and paid for on behalf of our customers. As soon as it is possible to reduce this rate we will file to do so," said Charles Biscieglia, chief executive of the gas company.
