NRC Renews Operating Licenses for Constellation's Nuclear Reactors at Clinton and Dresden Facilities

LCG, December 16, 2025--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced today that it has renewed the operating licenses of Constellation LLC’s Clinton Unit 1 in Clinton, Illinois, and Dresden Units 2 and 3, near Morris, Illinois, for an additional 20 years beyond the current expiration dates. The combined capacity of these three, Illinois-based nuclear units is 2,925 MW, and the operating license extension will enable the units to generate carbon-free power through about 2050.

ERCOT Announces Organizational Changes to Promote Grid Reliability, Rapid Demand Growth, and Innovation

LCG, December 12, 2025--Today, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. (ERCOT) announced strategic organizational changes designed to accelerate innovation, strengthen grid reliability, and support the unprecedented growth in the demand for electricity across Texas. To meet these objectives, ERCOT created two new organizations: Interconnection and Grid Analysis, and Enterprise Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The two organizations will formally launch in January 2026.

Southern Unit to Proceed with Three New Plants

LCG, Dec. 11, 2000--Southern Energy Inc. said on Friday it will proceed with development of three gas-fueled power plants, two in the Midwest ultimately totaling 1,120 megawatts of capacity, and one in New York of 750 megawatts.

"The Midwestern areas eventually served by two of these power plants are experiencing shortagesin electricity when demand is high," said Richard J. Pershing, chief executive of Southern Energy's Americas Group.

The company said it Energy intends to acquire the right to complete development of a 560 megawatt project in Wyandotte, Mich., south of Detroit. The development will be on a site formerly used for a variety of industrial purposes. The current developer already has obtained air permits for the site. and Southern expects to have the power plant running by the summer of 2003.

The company also began permitting to develop a power plant in Terre Haute, Ind., which will initially run as a 300 megawatt simple-cycle peaking plant in 2002. By 2004, the facility will be producing 560 megawatts of combined-cycle baseload power.

In New York, Southern plans a 750 megawatt expansion of its Bowline power plant in West Haverstraw, to be called Bowline Unit 3. Permitting for the project is underway, and the company intends to have Unit 3 running by the summer of 2003.
