LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Calpine Unit Plans 800 Megawatt Georgia Plant
LCG, Jan. 18, 2001Calpine Corp. said yesterday its SkyGen Energy unit plans to build an 800 megawatt natural gas-fired cogeneration plant in Augusta, Ga. The facility will provide thermal energy to DSM Chemicals North America Inc. and sell electric power in the regional wholesale market.Steam from the new facility will replace thermal energy DSM generates from on-site boilers. The chemical firm will retain the boilers for secondary and backup needs and will supply the Augusta Energy Center with condensate and makeup water. The facility will be located on about 25 acres of land leased from DSM adjacent to the chemical plant, Calpine said.Calpine will manage engineering and design, construction, and operations of the project as it movespast the development stage. The construction of the cogeneration facility is expected to begin in thespring, but now completion target was announced.Bill Price, president of DSM, said "The Augusta Energy Center will be one of the most efficient power plants built in Georgia. It will provide important energy cost savings for DSM while safeguarding the environment. During normal operations, air emissions from the Augusta site will be reduced as a result of this facility."
