LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

FPL, Coastal Begin Building 535 Megawatt Texas Plant
LCG, Jan. 18, 2001FPL Energy said yesterday that construction has begun on a 535 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant near Austin, Texas. The facility will be jointly owned by FPL and Coastal Power Co. and FPL will operate it.But those distinctions will not matter in a month or so, as the parent companies for both parties expect to complete their merger. FPL Group Inc., which also owns Florida Power & Light Co., and The Coastal Corp. announced a year ago today their plans to merge and expect to complete the deal within weeks. The new power plant, which will be called the Bastrop Energy Center, is located adjacent to the transmission systems of the Lower Colorado River Authority and Austin Energy. The Texas Colorado River is not the same one that flows through the Grand Canyon. The companies said they expect to complete construction of the new plant in the spring of next year.
