TransAlta Buys 55 Megawatt Peaker in New York

LCG, Jan. 25, 2001TransAlta Corp., a Calgary-based Canadian energy company, said this morning it has acquired a 55 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant in Binghamton, N.Y., near the Pennsylvania border and south of the finger lakes.

TransAlta said it will own and operate 100 per cent of the facility, the company's first power plantacquisition in the New York state market. The company said it made the purchase through the Merchant Energy Group of the Americas, which will be responsible for commercial management.

Merchant Energy Group of the Americas was established in 1997 by Gener SA, a Chilean-based electric generator, and focuses on commercial management of power generation assets in the United States. TransAlta bought 50 percent of the group last June.

As to the Binghamton purchase, Steve Snyder, TransAlta's chief executive noted "This is TransAlta's first power plant purchase in the dynamic eastern US power market. It's another step in our goal to grow our generation by 1,000 megawatts per year."

Gary Hart, TransAlta's general manager for the Ontario area, said the company is "committed to using local services and maintaining jobs at the plant. The Binghamton peaking plant is an efficient, well-maintained facility with access to key energy markets."
