LCG, Jan. 29, 2001Calpine Corp. said Friday it had acquired from Cogentrix Corp. of North Carolina the development rights for a 500 megawatt merchant power plant to be built near Bogalusa, La.

Construction of the $300 million Washington Parish Energy Center is expected to being "shortly," Calpine said, and commercial operation is penciled in for mid-2002.

Diana Naylor Knox, a senior vice president of Calpine, said "We view Louisiana as a growth market, and this acquisition solidifies Calpine's position in the Louisiana wholesale market as well as the Southeastern Electricity Reliability Council."
