Taiwan Parliament Says Finish Building Nuclear Plant
LCG, Jan. 31, 2001--Taiwan's opposition-controlled parliament early today passed a resolution calling on the government to resume construction immediately on a $5.4-billion, 2,700 megawatt nuclear power plant project it had ordered scrapped in October. The vote was 134-70, with only three members of the Nationalist Party defecting to President Chen Shui-bian's Democratic Progressive Party. Senior Democrat Progressives said the government would reject the result and call for mediation of the issue.Parris Chang, chairman of the parliament's Foreign Relations Committee and a member of Chen's party, said "The president has the power to mediate, and he will see if some kind of compromise solution is possible."The Nationalists are expected to do little more than listen during any mediation process, and then seek other legal and political means to force the government to resume construction of the plant.
