Calpine Buys Canadian Gas Producer

LCG, Feb. 8, 2001Calpine Corp. this morning announced plans to acquire Encal Energy Ltd., a Canadian natural gas and petroleum exploration and development firm based in Calgary, Alta., for about $1.2 billion including assumption of debt.

The acquisition will provide Calpine with about a trillion cubic feet equivalent of proved and probable natural gas reserves and access to firm gas transportation capacity from western Canada to California and the eastern U.S.

The San Jose, Calif.-based power provider said it was also getting "an accomplished management team capable of leading Calpine's business expansion in Canada."

Encal currently produces approximately 230 million cubic feet of gas equivalent per day, net of royalties, bringing Calpine's North America production to 390 million cubic feet equivalent. That's enough gas to fuel about 2,300 megawatts worth of power plants, the company said.
